Lakshmana Temple, Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India

Khajuraho

The world renowned town of Khajuraho in Madya Pradesh is designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site for its archeological and historical monuments. The famous erotic sculptures of Khajuraho temples are India’s unique gift to the world. They appear to raise a toast to life, to love, to joy and to perfect in execution. Life in its various moods and form has been captured in stone, which stands as a testimony to the craftsman’s artistry and extraordinary breadth of vision for the rich and powerful Chandela Rajputs, who conceived and constructed these.

The Khajuraho temples were built in a short span of hundred years, from 950-1050 AD in an amazing and inspired burst of creativity. Of the 85 original temples, today only 25 have survived, and are spread over three locations to constitute one of the world’s great artistic wonders. The creators of Khajuraho claimed descent from the moon and the legend behind the founding of this great dynasty and the temples is a fascinating one. Architecturally too, they are unique, being very different from the temple prototype of their period.

Khajuraho in essence, captures life and passion, to convey to the traveler the story of human journey in its perishable form. Thus, it presents an awe-inspiring and mesmerizing experience to its visitor.

KHAJURAHO| TOUR CODE: 0308

2 NIGHTS / 3 DAYS * KHAJURAHO*

It is a small town located amidst the forested plains of Bundelkhand in north-central Madhya Pradesh. Khajuraho has always remained tucked away from the main stream events of history and lent its name to a complex of exquisite Hindu and Jain temples. This is probably why the famed temples escaped the ravages of invaders.

The origin of these temples and the history of the Chandela dynasty, during whose era these were built are not fully documented. However, it is generally agreed that they were built between 950 A.D. & 1050 A.D. and that they numbered no fewer than 85. Today only 22 temples in a good state of preservation, survive. The engravings on these temples are highly sensual and erotic- that depicts in graceful forms intimate scenes of the whole range of human emotions and relationships. These sculptures congeal in stone a lyrical paean to love and passion and reflect the Chandela dynasty's immense appreciation for art.
